KEY INFORMATION

Description

Ivory Canyon is a natural gorge located west of Woodbridge, in Lochburn County. Formed over thousands of years by erosion from Fool's Gold Creek, the canyon cuts deep into the region's limestone plateau before opening onto the Paciflantic Ocean. Its distinctive white color, due to high concentrations of limestone and magnesium, has earned it the name Ivory Canyon.

Geology and environment

Fool's Gold Creek, now almost dry, is nothing more than a seasonal stream flowing between rocks sculpted by time. Nevertheless, it continues to play an important role in the natural drainage of the Utopic Hills, where it originates. The steep walls of the canyon feature clearly visible strata, evidence of successive sedimentary eras. The slopes are lined with Douglas fir, coastal pine, and a few red maples, forming a striking contrast with the whiteness of the cliffs.

Infrastructure and crossings

Historic GU Route 66 crosses the canyon four times via iconic engineering structures:

These structures illustrate the evolution of the historic road and its gradual adaptation to the challenging terrain of Lochburn.

Enhancement and points of interest

Ranked among the county's major scenic sites, Ivory Canyon has been the subject of a tourism development program initiated by the municipality of Woodbridge since the 2000s. Viewpoints have been created along the ridges, the most famous of which, Woodridge Peak, offers exceptional views of the valley, the town, and the northern and southern Renewal Island coasts. The summit, covered with Douglas fir forests, is accessible via a marked trail connecting downtown Woodbridge to the ridges overlooking the canyon.
