KEY INFORMATIONS

Bartholomew Grinslade (1644–1696) was an English merchant from Plymouth, regarded as one of the first entrepreneurs of the Utopian territory. Arriving on Eastedge Islet in 1672, he played an active role in the economic development of the region by co-founding the Utopian malachite mine alongside explorer Malcolm Victor Alamour.

Biography

• Origins and arrival

From a modest family of English maritime merchants, Bartholomew Grinslade left England after losing his ship in a storm off the Azores. He joined the Utopian archipelago via a British expedition, determined to rebuild his fortune in this new, largely unexplored territory.

Upon his arrival in Port Utopia at the end of 1672, he met Malcolm Alamour, who had just discovered a vein of an unknown green stone. Bartholomew Grinslade immediately grasped the potential of this resource and joined Alamour on Eastedge Islet to co-found the Grinslade & Alamour Extraction Company.

• Investment and partnership

In 1674, he provided Malcolm Alamour with the capital, tools, and manpower needed to open the first mining gallery. In return, he obtained a majority share in the exploitation rights for 25 years. This gave birth to the Grinslade & Alamour Extraction Company, the first officially established enterprise in what would become Lochburn County. Through his investment, Bartholomew Grinslade also contributed to the consolidation and growth of the hamlet of Aldmoor Point.

• Life in Aldmoor Point

Grinslade settled permanently in Aldmoor Point, where he had the Grinslade House built — an elegant turreted wooden residence with covered galleries, recognizable by its dark red facade and white balustrades. One of the oldest residences in the village, it remains in the Grinslade family to this day. Though influential, he never sought political office, leaving Alamour to guide the community.

• Death

He died peacefully on September 11, 1696, at the age of 52. His son, though born on the island, left Aldmoor Point and sold his shares in the mine to the colonial government a few years later.

Legacy

Today, the mine is operated by the international company Coastline Mining, specializing in the extraction of high-value mineral resources. It holds an exclusive concession on the Utopian malachite deposit, perpetuating the economic legacy initiated by Grinslade.

The Grinslade name remains associated with the economic genesis of Lochburn County and the history of Utopian malachite.

Fun fact:

Legend has it that during the first works at the mine, Bartholomew Grinslade accidentally mistook a pocket of malachite for an ordinary rock and used it as a table wedge. It was only upon hearing the astonishment of his workers that he realized the value of the "simple" piece.

Ever since, it is said that even the most ordinary things in Aldmoor Point may be hiding a treasure.
