General information:

Oxheller Island is the southernmost and most populous island of Lochburn County, in the eastern archipelago of the Grand Utopia of America. It is home to three municipalities: Port Oxheller, the county's oldest city and international gateway; Valbeach, a coastal town shaped by over a century of sugar cane cultivation; and Cypress Landing, a seasonal hamlet nestled in a sheltered cove on the western shore. The island's name traces back to 17th-century navigators who described a cove thick with sharp mollusks they called "ox shells" — a term that gradually corrupted, over the centuries, into Oxheller.

Geography

Location

Oxheller Island is the southernmost island of Lochburn County. Oriented roughly north–south with a slight eastward lean, it sits apart from the two larger northern islands of the county. Its northern tip faces the city of Utopia, to which it is connected by a road bridge — its only land connection to the rest of Lochburn County. Port Oxheller, on the northeastern shore, opens directly onto the county's maritime zone and serves as the island's international gateway.

Topography

The island is elongated and relatively narrow. Its northern section, where Port Oxheller is located, is more compact and hilly, while the center and south broaden into a mix of wooded slopes and agricultural plains. On the west coast, two hills flanking the bay of Valbeach — known locally as the Mendoza Hills — create a sheltered microclimate, making subtropical sugar cane cultivation possible in a region otherwise dominated by conifers. The southern end of the island, largely occupied by the Mendoza family estate and its plantation fields, is the flattest and most fertile area.

The island covers an area of approximately 17.5 km² (6.75 sq mi).

Municipalities

The island comprises 2 towns and 1 hamlet.

Economy

The economy of Oxheller Island rests on three pillars established since the 19th century. The sugar industry dominates: Manuel Mendoza — Pure Cane Sugar operates a large plantation near Valbeach and a refinery in Port Oxheller, linked since 1884 by a private railway running the length of the island. Maritime trade is the island's second engine — Port Oxheller's industrial harbor handles regular cargo shipments of sugar and imported goods destined for the archipelago. Tourism, though secondary, plays a growing role through Port Oxheller's prestigious White Gull Marina and Valbeach's Seaside Amusement Pier and annual Sugar Cane Festival.
