General information:

Port Oxheller is one of the oldest cities in the Grand Utopia of America. It still vies with Utopia for the title of oldest city. While Port Oxheller was undeniably the first place of arrival for British settlers, its official recognition as a city was somewhat delayed, unlike Utopia, which quickly organized itself around a structured core. This historical rivalry remains a defining feature of the city's identity.

The island on which the city is located, Oxheller Island, owes its name to mysterious accounts by 17th-century navigators who described a cove infested with sharp shells like “ox shells” (an ancient term, corrupted over time to “Oxheller”). The name of the city naturally derived from that of the island.

Economy and infrastructures

The port and maritime connections

Port Oxheller has always been a port for goods and passengers. As a gateway for immigrants for centuries, the city has welcomed generations from Europe and elsewhere. The port reached its peak in the 19th century, when the docks were expanded to accommodate both large merchant ships and transatlantic liners. Even today, its ferry port remains a major hub, connecting Grand Utopia of America to Esterlon, the Republic of Ceresia, and the United States of America. In addition to passenger traffic, the port continues to play a vital role in the import of manufactured goods and the export of agricultural and sugar products.

Port Oxheller also marks the eastern terminus of GU Route 66, the country’s oldest east–west highway, which for decades has crossed towns, fields, and counties all the way to Nivalis in Bowerstone county.

The sugar industry

The presence of the MM – Pure Cane Sugar factory, financed by Manuel Mendoza, contributed decisively to the economic development of Port Oxheller, as it did in Valbeach. The establishment of the factory in 1875 transformed the town permanently, providing hundreds of jobs and structuring local working life. Sugar cane, transported by boat from nearby plantations, is processed on site before being shipped throughout Lochburn County and beyond. Today, this sector remains a source of industrial pride and a pillar of the municipal economy.

White Gull Marina

The White Gull Marina, now a symbol of elegance and prestige, is an integral part of the local identity. Originally built as a small marina in the early 20th century, it gradually gained importance with the rise of seaside tourism and recreational boating. It welcomes wealthy boaters and visitors and remains one of the most popular places in the city. Hotels, restaurants, and the famous clubhouse have sprung up around the marina, contributing to Port Oxheller's mysterious and sophisticated aura.

Culture and heritage

The Rudolf Smatlai Theater

Built in 1819 thanks to an Austro-Hungarian patron, the Rudolf Smatlai Theater is one of the oldest cultural buildings in Port Oxheller. It has stood the test of time as a hub for art and entertainment, hosting concerts and silent film screenings, followed by a major renovation in 1927 financed by local donors. Today, the theater offers a varied season combining contemporary plays, chamber opera, and a Festival of Passages dedicated to stories of exile and sea crossings.
