FUN FACT
He is said to have recognized any ship entering Port Oxheller by the sound of her bell, a talent that served him well when he ran the blockade on moonless nights.
</aside>
Gideon Tremaine was born in Port Oxheller in 1783, in a family of fishermen. Since the decree of 1712 had made Port Oxheller the colony's only commercial port, he grew up watching every ship, settler and cargo pass through its docks.
In 1808, Gideon was appointed dock master. In the years that followed, he bought ships of his own and became one of the port's shipowners.
The tax of 1824 on fishing and timber struck the fleets and cargoes that made the port live. Gideon refused to collect it on his docks, and the dockworkers followed him.
In the winter of 1824, he became one of the four representatives on the committee led by his friend Elias Ravenscroft. With Abigail Stanhope, he traveled by boat from Utopia and Port Oxheller to the secret meetings at Pamparina Bay, always under cover of darkness.
During the war, the Crown blockaded Port Oxheller to cut the supplies reaching the Utopians from America.
In December 1837, Gideon broke through the blockade with his own ships, carrying American supplies, but he was wounded. He died in Port Oxheller on 22 January 1838, five years before the independence he had fought for.
