Falldusk Creek is a modest but scenic stream winding through the forested interior of Belden Island. Born from a cluster of springs nestled among the granite escarpments of the island's central ridge, it carves a steady northward path through dense conifer stands before quietly emptying into the Paciflantic Ocean along the island's rugged northern shore.
The creek's most celebrated feature is its upper cascade â a slender, powerful waterfall that drops from a sheer cliff face deep within the forest, sending fine mist into the surrounding pines before the water finds its calmer course downstream. This waterfall, framed by moss-covered rocks and ancient firs, can be admired from the small bridge on Lochburn County Road 4, where travelers passing between Flatfields and Clearfog Harbor often stop to rest and take in the view. A corrugated culvert channels the flow beneath the road before the creek resumes its course toward the sea.
The name Falldusk is said to have been coined by early settlers who regularly crossed the stream at the end of the working day. At that hour, the setting sun would filter through the forest canopy and bathe the waterfall in a warm amber glow â a fleeting but striking spectacle that made the creek one of Belden Island's most quietly cherished natural landmarks.
