FUN FACT

[a small, memorable detail about the town]

</aside>

Lochburn City is the county seat and largest settlement of Lochburn County, in the insular archipelago of Grand Utopia of America. Founded in 1665, alongside Utopia and Port Oxheller, it became the capital of the colony in 1712 and remained the capital of the territory for more than two centuries, until Metropolis took over in 1925. It has remained the administrative heart of Lochburn County ever since.

HISTORY

∟ A capital chosen to end a rivalry

Lochburn City was founded in 1665, at the same time as Utopia and Port Oxheller. Upon their arrival on the archipelago, British settlers established three colonies almost simultaneously, one on each of the main islands: Lochburn City on Belden Island, Utopia on Renewal Island, and Port Oxheller on Oxheller Island. No town existed on the archipelago before them. At the time, Grand Utopia of America was still just a British colony, and most of the rest of the archipelago remained unexplored. Over the following decades, the settlement grew into a proper town and served as the seat of the governor by custom rather than by law. When founder Thaddeus Lochburn died in 1705, Utopia and Port Oxheller each claimed the status of capital, the first for its court and its church, the second for its harbor. After seven years of failed mediation by his son Cornelius, the Board of Trade sent Lord Ashworth from London. In 1712, following his report, Queen Anne named Lochburn City the capital by royal decree and adopted his compromise: Port Oxheller became the colony's sole port, and Utopia its seat of justice and religion.

∟ Two centuries as capital

Lochburn City kept its status as capital through the Lochburn Rebellion of 1824 and the American annexation of 1843, which made Grand Utopia of America an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1875, upon the creation of the counties, it was at once the capital of the territory and the seat of the new Lochburn County. In 1925, after a decade of construction led by the architect Edgar Hawkins, the brand new capital of Metropolis was inaugurated. Lochburn City ceased to be the capital after two centuries, but kept a strong symbolic and administrative role as county seat.

∟ The Lochburn Rebellion

As the seat of colonial authority, the city became the natural epicenter of the 1824 Lochburn Rebellion, a defining event in the region's push for greater autonomy. The unrest began with the suspicious death of Nathaniel Bramwell in the city's cells in October 1824 and grew into a long war between the Crown and the Utopians backed by the United States, ending in 1843 with the independence of the archipelago and its annexation by the United States.

∟ Lochburn City today

Lochburn City remains the administrative heart of Lochburn County, anchoring the GU-66 corridor that connects the county's largest settlements. The city includes the coastal district of Tannside, built on the site of a 19th-century tannery and now home to the Lafontaine Distillery. Its role as county seat has kept it central to the region's growth, even as newer economic engines, like the Manuel Mendoza refinery and Katrina H. Airport, have emerged elsewhere in the county.

DISTRICTS

Lochburn City is made up of five districts: Tannside, Fairgrove Park, Ashmoor Heights, Kingsgate and Cobble Cross. Each plays a distinct role in the life of the city, from the city center to its freight and industrial zone.

District Zip code
Cobble Cross (downtown) LB0400
Tannside LB0401
Fairgrove Park LB0402
Ashmoor Heights LB0403
Kingsgate LB0404

∟ Tannside

Tannside is the mixed-use coastal district of Lochburn City, on the eastern edge of the city along GU Route 66 toward Flatfields. It was built on the site of the old Lochburn Tannery, a vast red-brick building from the late 19th century that Rosalie Lafontaine bought in 1971 and turned into the Lafontaine Distillery, which opened in 1973. The former tannery remains the landmark of the district and houses the only rum distillery in Lochburn County. Further along the waterfront lies Dunmoor Beach, a cold, bare stretch of shore that is rarely visited today but remains tied to the events of the 1824 Lochburn Rebellion.

∟ Fairgrove Park

Fairgrove Park is the logistics and industrial district of Lochburn City. Developed on the higher ground above Tannside, it brings together the warehouses, freight activity and industrial sites that the rest of the city relies on. It is also home to the Utopian American headquarters of Grand Utopia Express, the freight company founded by MyGodness, which settled there in 2021.

∟ Ashmoor Heights

Ashmoor Heights is the district of Lochburn City built on the heights above the city center, home to the city's hospital. The Bramwell Memorial Hospital is named after Nathaniel Bramwell, the timber merchant of Clearfog Harbor whose death in a colonial cell in 1824 sparked the Lochburn Rebellions. A statue of him stands in front of the main entrance, looking down on the city where he was arrested.

ECONOMY

∟ Administration first

Unlike Utopia or Port Oxheller, Lochburn City's economy has always been secondary to its political role. Government offices and services make up a significant share of local employment.

∟ Tannside and the distillery

The Tannside district, once the site of a 19th-century tannery, now hosts the Lafontaine Distillery, the only rum distillery in Lochburn County, adding a modest but distinctive industrial and tourism dimension to the city's economy.
