Lochburn City is the county seat and largest settlement of Lochburn County, in the insular archipelago of Grand Utopia of America. Founded in 1665, alongside Utopia and Port Oxheller, it grew into the capital of the colony some seven decades later, before losing that status to Metropolis once Grand Utopia of America had been annexed by the United States as an unincorporated territory, and later became the administrative heart of Lochburn County.

HISTORY

∟ A capital chosen to end a rivalry

Lochburn City was founded in 1665, at the same time as Utopia and Port Oxheller. Upon their arrival on the archipelago, British settlers established three colonies almost simultaneously, one on each of the main islands: Lochburn City on Belden Island, Utopia on Renewal Island, and Port Oxheller on Oxheller Island. No town existed on the archipelago before them. At the time, Grand Utopia of America was still just a British colony, and most of the rest of the archipelago remained unexplored. Over the following decades, the settlement grew into a proper town, while Utopia and Port Oxheller began competing for the informal status of capital of the colony. Around the 1740s, once Lochburn City was well established, the reigning English king intervened directly, designating it the capital of the colony by royal decree, ending the dispute between the two rivals.

∟ From colonial capital to county seat

Long after the American annexation, once the whole archipelago had finally been explored and mapped and Grand Utopia of America had become an unincorporated territory of the United States, a brand new capital, Metropolis, was built on the main island. Lochburn City lost its status as capital, but kept a strong symbolic and administrative role, eventually becoming the seat of Lochburn County upon its creation in 1875.

∟ The Lochburn Rebellion

As a former seat of colonial authority, the city became the natural epicenter of the 1824 Lochburn Rebellion, a defining event in the region's push for greater autonomy.

∟ Lochburn City today

Lochburn City remains the administrative heart of Lochburn County, anchoring the GU-66 corridor that connects the county's largest settlements. The city sits close to Tannside, the coastal district built on the site of a 19th-century tannery, now home to the Lafontaine Distillery. Its role as county seat has kept it central to the region's growth, even as newer economic engines, like the Manuel Mendoza refinery and Katrina H. Airport, have emerged elsewhere in the county.

Unlike Utopia or Port Oxheller, Lochburn City's economy has always been secondary to its political role. Government offices and services make up a significant share of local employment.

The nearby Tannside district, once the site of a 19th-century tannery, now hosts the Lafontaine Distillery, the only rum distillery in Lochburn County, adding a modest but distinctive industrial and tourism dimension to the city's economy.
