The Lafontaine Distillery is a rum distillery founded in 1973 in the Tannside district of Lochburn City, by Martinican immigrant Rosalie Lafontaine. Established in a converted 19th-century tannery, it is the only rum distillery in Lochburn County and one of the few in Grand Utopia of America. Known for its Lafontaine Rum brand, the distillery sources its molasses exclusively from the Valbeach plantation and remains a family-run operation under the direction of Madeleine "Mady" Lafontaine, Rosalie's daughter.

FUN FACTS

The copper still Rosalie brought from Martinique in 1952 is still on display in the distillery's entrance hall. Madeleine calls it "Grandma Copper."

Rosalie never drank her own rum straight. She always mixed it with a splash of fresh lime juice and a pinch of brown sugar, a habit she claimed she brought "straight from the cane fields of Le Robert."

ORIGINS

∟ A dream carried across the ocean

The Lafontaine Distillery did not begin in a building. It began in a suitcase. When Rosalie Lafontaine left Martinique in 1952, unable to break into the island's male-dominated rum industry, she packed a single copper still and booked passage on a cargo ship to Grand Utopia of America. She had heard of Valbeach, a small community in Lochburn County with an active sugar cane plantation, and saw in it the opportunity that her home island had always refused her.

∟ The garage years

From a rented space on the outskirts of Lochburn City, Rosalie began producing rum in small quantities and selling bottles door to door. Word spread quickly. Through the 1950s and 1960s, she built a loyal local following, reinvesting every cent into her dream of a proper distillery.

∟ The Old Tannery

In 1971, the old Lochburn Tannery in what is now the Tannside district came up for sale. A vast red-brick building from the late 19th century, it had sat empty for years. Rosalie saw something no one else did: a distillery waiting to be born. Its industrial vats, thick stone walls, and drainage systems were perfectly suited to rum production. She secured a loan, bought the building, and spent two years transforming it. The Lafontaine Distillery opened in 1973.

THE DISTILLERY

∟ The Tannside district

The distillery is located in the lower part of the Tannside district, on the eastern edge of Lochburn City along GU Route 66 toward Flatfields. The district stretches from the waterfront, where the distillery sits, up to the newer logistics and industrial zone developed on the higher ground. The red-brick facade of the former tannery remains largely intact, a deliberate choice by the Lafontaine family to preserve the building's industrial heritage.

∟ Production

The distillery produces rum exclusively from molasses sourced from the Valbeach plantation, operated by Manuel Mendoza β€” Pure Cane Sugar. The molasses arrives by tanker truck and is distilled, aged in oak barrels, and bottled on site. The result is Lafontaine Rum, a product that has become a regional staple and a point of local pride. A small tasting room, located in the former foreman's office, welcomes visitors by appointment.

∟ Lafontaine Rum

Lafontaine Rum is distributed across all of GUOA and exported in limited quantities to Grand Utopia, the United States, and France. A confidential distribution network extends the brand's reach to select markets across Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Asia, a quiet testament to the quality that Rosalie Lafontaine built from nothing.

LEGACY

∟ A family institution

Since Madeleine Lafontaine took over the directorship in 2004, the distillery has entered a new era. Madeleine has modernized production processes and expanded distribution while keeping the founding recipes unchanged. The distillery employs a small but loyal workforce, many of whom worked alongside Rosalie herself.

∟ Rosalie's presence

Even after Rosalie's passing in November 2019, her presence remains felt throughout the distillery. The original copper still she brought from Martinique in 1952 stands in the entrance hall. The tasting room walls are lined with photographs from the early years. And every bottle of Lafontaine Rum still carries the same recipe she perfected in a rented garage more than seventy years ago.
